Chiara and Caterina, the 10-year-old twins, live in a countryside house. The garden around their house is the home of many insects on hot summer afternoons. While Chiara is amused by their colours, Caterina chases them to kill them all. After Pietro’s mother’s untimely death, he struggles as a full-time dad but with poor results. To remedy a quarrel he had with Caterina during dinner, he invents a story about the magic of fireflies. These insects shine when they host the souls of people who are gone. While Chiara sees in this story the hope of seeing her mother again, Caterina is cynical and disillusioned. During the night an insect enters the two girls’ rooms.
