The Talking Hands

Mathaduva Kaigalu (Kannada)

India | 98 min | Drama | 2019 | Feature Film (Live Action) | Kannada

Chandri is a hearing and speech impaired girl who keeps her hope alive to go to school and wants to feel equal to her hearing brother. School refuses her for admission, Bassakka ignores Chandri, keeps deafness in secret from relatives and encourages her son, sends him to school with care and love. It discourages Chandri and makes her feel alone. When Akshatha an Indian Sign Language Interpreter enters into her life a miracle happens. Bassakka feels that sign language is the social stigma, more than the deafness.

Directors Note or Statement on the Film Our country’s population of hearing and speech-disabled remains invisible at schools as most of them even fail to complete school. Parents have developed their own signs, they do not interact with their children, they say you cannot hear, you just keep quit. Some of their parents are lazy and ignore their deaf children, this is maybe due to illiteracy or the family don’t have any education about deafness. I approached various Deaf schools in Bangalore, met Teachers, Interpreters & interacted with students & parents to understand the difficulties they face at home, in their surroundings, then started scripting for this film.
